Things that might help when it feels like the world is burning
Hello wonderful humans,
Times are super tough right now and I just want to take a moment to recognise that. The world feels like it is on fire and I don’t know about you but everywhere I go, someone is talking to me about the cost of living crisis, asking me how I’m planning to save money, opening up about their fears and asking if I’ve heard this or that about the next energy price increase. This stuff, mixed with post pandemic fatigue and the state the planet is in feels f-ing heavy and it’s no wonder the collective energy right now is one of fear and stringency.
This dynamic could be bringing up all sorts of feels for you, I know that we are seeing a lot of people who feel lost, confused, scared and under pressure to cut expenses as much as possible and we totally understand why.
I am not immune to the impact of these things, SLAM is my only source of income and so in times of financial struggle I am hugely affected, however I am not one to wallow in fear, it doesn’t serve me and it consumes my energy in ways that stop me from being able to show up and serve my community, I didn’t start SLAM to earn a massive salary, I started it because I was called to do this work, I am so deeply passionate about sharing the life changing benefits of strength training, advocating for womens health and sticking a huge middle finger to diet culture and so today I want to share with you some tools and resources that I have created to offer support in these really difficult times.
We need community so much right now, we need our village and I hope that near or far, we can offer you space to be part of ours.
1- The Safe Meadow Meditation
I wrote this during lockdown when I desperately needed to travel but couldn’t. I ended up in a really negative headspace where I started to believe that if I couldn’t travel I would have to just surrender to being miserable.. I sat one day with my journal and wrote myself an escape plan - a place I could go to in my mind that would help give me distance (even if it wasn’t physical) from the darkness we were all facing at that time. I hope it offers you a break from any fears or worries and helps bring you the courage to process what you are going through.
2- Connection Club
I am very fortunate to have a venue and I want to share it with as many people as possible, I recognize that not everyone can afford a gym membership right now but that we all need a space to connect with other humans, a problem shared is a problem halved after all! And so I am introducing our connection club. We’ll meet once a month to start with, on Thursday at 11.30 am at SLAM. Nothing fancy, nothing that costs money, just a space to chat, connect, laugh and soak up the good vibes. There’ll be tea and coffee on hand and we can all pitch in a couple of biscuits or cakes if you feel like it. If you’re a member you can even double up an open gym session beforehand or jump into SGPT after, if you’re not you are still welcome to come and join us. The first one will be on Thursday 29th of September and you can register here so I know how many folks to prepare for.
3- Working from home? Come hang out with us!
During our opening hours, we are able to offer space to those who would like a change of scenery to get some work done. There’ll be tea and coffee on hand, you can even tap into our wifi and of course, we’ll have plenty of banter to keep you entertained! Working from home or being self-employed can feel really isolating at times so I want to offer space to connect with other humans, process what’s coming up for you, or even sound off on ideas with other creative peeps! Members can drop in any time apart from Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday between 10:30 am and 12.30 pm. Nonmembers are welcome too, we ask for a small fee to contribute toward rising energy costs.
4- Power Hour - coming soon!
This is something I started during the lockdown and it was SO powerful! If you’re like me and struggle with procrastination and accountability to get sh*t done then this one is for you! We’ll come together weekly on zoom to work alongside each other and get those tasks done! It could be anything from writing that email you’ve been putting off to making time to deal with life admin, work projects or even dedicating an hour to read a book or do a workout! At the start of the session there’ll be a bit of connection time where we’ll give a brief overview of what each of us is going to work on, I’ll set a timer and we’ll get to it, coming back together at the end to talk about how we got on! Seems so simple but honestly accountability is everything- especially when it comes to getting those difficult tasks done and you’ll be surprised how much you get done when you make that commitment to show up for yourself and others! Everyone is welcome! The first meet will be announced soon on our socials so make sure you’re following us if you’re keen to join!
I really hope these resources offer you some support in this absolute chaos, please do utilise them if you are called to and as always if anyone is ever struggling our door is always open and the kettle is always on, please don’t ever believe that you are alone, we are here to help and we’d be honoured to support you <3
